Celebration: Angel Dresses

By Carole Taylor
Lake Tahoe, California

My nieces are now 23 and 25 yrs old. When they were little girls I loved to sew dresses for them. I made dresses for every occasion, Birthday, Christmas, Easter, Spring, Valentines Day, First day of school dresses were their favorite. I also would make them a summer outfit. They use to love to see the material I bought and ask what I would be making them. Then while I was sewing it together I would hear: "When will it be done Auntie?" Angel Dresses

Inspirational Quote

For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together.  For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad.

Fall 2008 Newsletter

As fall begins to prepare for the process of blanketing the Northwest with fallen leaves, I am watching the squirrel super highway in my back yard get clogged up with nut gathering maniacs!  The little guys seem to be in a panic this year as they race up and down the tall fir trees in the forest, knocking down pinecones by the dozens, and flying about as if they are super squirrels.  One brave fur ball runs out to the tip end of a branch, knocks down the cone, and does a back flip just before he is about to fall, he looks so happy!  Does all this activity mean the Farmers Almanac is going to be right about winter?  Brrrrrr...

I am anticipating this fall with all the beautiful celebrations that will unfold around my table. October 22 is Family Table Day, my favorite activity on any day!     This time of year is also full of back-to-school rituals, the smell of cinnamon, and brisk walks through crisp pumpkin weather days.  Take time this fall to make a long list of blessings that you are thankful for, invite a friend over for hot cider that just became an empty nester, or take an afternoon to go read to a new kindergarten class.  Fall is a time to gather and reconnect, celebrate, and be grateful as you prepare your harvest.  Enjoy a day at your favorite farm and eat hot buttered corn.  Then grab your favorite quilt and gather the family around the table for an evening of remembering and story telling.

Peace begins at home ~

Recipe - Golden Apple Cheesecake From the Washington Apple Growers Association

Ingredients:
Sweet Pastry (recipe follows)
4 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced Golden Delicious apples
1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
2/3 cup sugar
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup sliced almonds

Sweet Pastry: In medium bowl with electric mixer, beat 6 tablespoons softened butter, 1/3 cup sugar, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla, and 1/8 teaspoon salt until smooth. Stir in 1cup all-purpose flour until soft dough forms.

Preparation:
1) Prepare Sweet Pastry. Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Pat pastry into bottom and 1 1/4 inches up sides of lightly greased springform pan. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned; set aside. Reduce oven heat to 400 degrees F.

2) Place apples in shallow pan, cover with foil, and bake 15 minutes. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, beat cream cheese with 1/3 cup sugar. Beat in egg, lemon zest, vanilla, and salt until smooth; spoon into partially baked pie shell.

3) Arrange warm, partially cooked apple slices on top of cream cheese layer. Combine remaining 1/3 cup sugar and the cinnamon; sprinkle over apples. Top with almonds. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until crust is brown and apples are tender. Cool before cutting.
